Each applicant must successfully pass a civil service written exam, with a minimum score of 70 points in an open, competitive and free civil service examination. Applicants and employees are hired and promoted without regard to race, color, gender, religion, age, or disability.

Candidates must be certified as a Basic Firefighter by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection and have a current EMS certification (Basic or Paramedic) issued by the Department of State Health Services.
