Election
The General Election scheduled for May 6, 2017 was canceled after only four people filed for the four open at-large Belton City Council positions. As prescribed by state law, the election was cancelled with each unopposed candidate considered elected to office. 

Those elected to a two-year term beginning on May 9, 2017 are:
  • David K. Leigh*
  • Craig Pearson*
  • Dan Kirkley*
  • John R. Holmes Sr.

* = incumbent


CANDIDATE QUALIFICATION INFORMATION

To run for City Council or Mayor a candidate must file for office within the posted filing period. In addition, see below for qualifications outlined by the City of Belton Charter and the State of Texas Election Code Sec. 141.001 (a).

City of Belton Belton Home Rule Charter Qualifications 
  • Must be a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Belton for at least the previous 12 months
  • Must be at least 18
  • Must not be delinquent on any indebtedness to the City
  • City employees are not eligible to file
  • May not hold any other elected public office
  • Candidates may only file for one office per election
  • A councilmember with a year or more remaining on his or her term must resign to run for Mayor

Texas Eligibility Requirements for Public Office
  • Citizen of the United States
  • 18 years old
  • Have not been determined mentally incompetent by a final judgment in court
  • No felony convictions
  • Resided in state continuously for previous 12 months
  • Must satisfy any other eligibility requirements prescribed by law for this office
