2018 TML AwardThe Texas Municipal League (TML) announced today that the City of Belton is the recipient of a Municipal Excellence Award for Managerial Innovations. The award was presented at TML's annual conference in Fort Worth. Belton was selected in the under 25,000 population category.

The award recognized the Prosecutor Portal, which was a joint initiative of the Belton Police Department and Bell County District Attorney's office. The portal allows Belton PD to submit case files to the DA via a secure Internet connection. The portal has been in place for more than a year. Prior to the establishment of the portal, Belton case files were burned to DVDs and hand delivered to the DA's office.

"The Prosecutor Portal is a low-cost way to speed up the application of justice, which is a priority for crime victims. It's always in the public interest to get criminals off the street as soon as possible," Belton Police Chief Gene Ellis said. "The portal is also adaptable. Now that the award has been made public, we anticipate other small cities and counties reaching out to see how they can do the same thing. In fact, we have already had contact from one city.
