School Resource Officers in front of the Belton Police Department on the first day of school.The Police Records Unit is responsible for processing all reports generated by the department. This unit is staffed by a Community Service Specialist who serves as the custodian of records and is supervised by the Deputy Chief of the Support Services Division. Each business day, reports are processed and forwarded to the appropriate authority as required by policy. Strict guidelines govern the release of reports and related documents. 

Texas law outlines the criteria of what is considered a public record. The department complies with records requests in accordance with public records laws.

Accident Reports may be obtained directly from the Texas Department of Transportation.


To obtain a copy of an accident report, an applicant must provide two or more of the following (pursuant to Texas Transportation Code, Sec. 550.065) :  

  • Date of the Crash
  • Name of any person involved
  • The specific location of the crash
   Texas Statutes decree what fees may be lawfully imposed for inspecting or obtaining a copy of public records.
