IMG_9568 - CopyToday U.S. Rep. John R. Carter, Tx-31, announced that the City of Belton has been awarded $5 million in Community Project Funding to replace the low water crossing in Shirttail Bend with a bridge over Nolan Creek.
During rainstorms trees and brush dam up the low water crossing and cause flooding. Replacing the low water crossing with a bridge achieves the following goals:
  • Flood mitigation for private and public properties east of I-35
  • Emergency access for vehicles and personnel
  • Access to essential City infrastructure--lift station and utility lines
  • Access to regional law enforcement training facility
  • Development of landlocked properties.
It is not unusual for residents living on the other side of the crossing to get cut off from town during and after rain events. In 2010, the flooding was so extensive several residents had to be rescued from the area.
